The Challenge:
For years, Seagate Technology relied on Continu’s substantial 3-phasebackup equipment to protect their mission-critical data center.
With two separate power supplies feeding their systems, they felt secure against potential outages. But one day, their worst fear materialised, an unexpected fault in the distribution board downstream of one of the UPS systems triggered a shutdown.
Although the second UPS kept their operations intact, the team panicked, unsure of what was happening and how to fix it. It is no surprise this may cause anxiety as a power interruption could halt factory operations, requiring critical time to reset machinery and costing thousands of pounds in lost production.
The Approach:
When Seagate called, Continu was on-site within two hours. Our senior engineer quickly diagnosed that one side of their backup system had shut down due to the distribution board fault.
However, thanks to their parallel-UPS setup, they remained protected the entire time. What they lacked wasn’t reliable equipment, it was a flexible service contract with remote monitoring activated.
Our engineer reset the system and got them back to full operation in no time. This incident exposed a gap: without remote monitoring, we couldn’t troubleshoot remotely, leaving their team panicked, struggling to diagnose the issue, and uncertain about Continu’s response time, escalating the situation unnecessarily.

The Results:
This wake-up call led to lasting improvements. Continu worked closely with Seagate to create a bespoke service plan that included remote monitoring and on-demand expert support, ensuring such situations would never cause panic again.
We provided detailed recommendations to enhance their backup strategy, optimising the design of their power system for future stability. Additionally, we delivered two days of in-depth training for their teams, empowering them to handle potential alarm storms with confidence and clarity.
